Ghanaian football legend Asamoah Gyan aims to return to the Ghana national team fold with an eye on featuring at the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Gyan is presently without a club since last turning out for Accra-based Legon Cities, and he has not featured for the Black Stars since he retired in July 2019.

The former Sunderland striker says, though, that he is presently on a fitness regime aimed at getting set for what could potentially be a fourth World Cup appearance.

“The World Cup is every footballer’s dream. I think I’ve got a bit of energy left in me to prove myself once again.

“I’ve been out for almost two years now due to injuries, but I just need to get my body back in shape. It’s an eight-week programme, and according to my physical instructor, I’m improving faster than he thought.

“Then I must see how my body reacts to playing competitive football,” he said.

Six of Gyan’s 51 international goals were at the previous World Cup tournaments he featured in 2006, 2010 and 2014.

“I haven’t announced my retirement,” he said.

“Anything can happen, you know. It’s happened before, talking about Cameroon in 1994, with Roger Milla coming back from retirement to play in a World Cup.”

Ghana have been recruiting new players ahead of their return to the mundial with the additions of Tariq Lamptey, who plays at Brighton and Hove Albion and Inaki Williams of Athletic Club de Bilbao.
