CNN, MS NOW, Politico to sue White House over Trump ban
The three American news outlets CNN, Politico and MS NOW, which United States President Donald Trump banned from the White House, have announced plans to sue the American leader over the decision.
Mr Trump had last week announced that journalists from CNN, Politico and MS NOW would no longer be allowed to cover him from the White House, citing the news organisations’ unfavourable coverage of him and his administration.
In a joint statement on Monday, the three news organisations announced that they were pursuing legal action to “protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports”.
After the announcement, journalists from CNN, Politico and MS NOW were denied entry to White House grounds on Saturday, prompting the organisations to say they would “vigorously defend our First Amendment rights.”
In Monday’s statement, the organisation argued that the Trump administration revoked their reporters’ credentials without notice, stating that the action threatens press freedom in the United States.
“Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists’ credentials because it objected to our reporting. Left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government interference,” the news outlets stated.
Mr Trump issued a similar order in February 2025 against the Associated Press (AP), banning its journalists from the Oval Office, Air Force One, and other events too small for a full press corps after it refused to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.
The AP has since filed a lawsuit against Mr Trump over the decision, with the case still pending in court.
