The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Waidi Shaibu, has pledged improved accommodation, a new bus and better medical support for troops of the Nigerian Army’s 4 Brigade in Edo.

Mr Shaibu gave the assurance in his address to the troops following the presentation of their welfare challenges by the brigade commander during his visit to the brigade headquarters.

He said arrangements would be made for renovations to improve the soldiers’ accommodation, while a new bus would be provided to ease their transportation challenges.

The COAS said the army remained committed to providing decent accommodation and ensuring access to functional medical facilities for personnel, their families and children.

He, however, urged the troops to reciprocate the support by maintaining discipline, professionalism and commitment to their duties.

Mr Shaibu said soldiers must conduct themselves in accordance with the law while protecting civilians and dealing with criminal elements within their areas of responsibility.

He commended the troops for rejecting extortion during Operation Checkmate, describing their conduct as commendable.

“When Operation Checkmate came around, it was found that you are dutiful and you have eschewed that aspect of extortion. So, congratulations to you all,” he said.

The army chief warned that misconduct by soldiers could undermine public confidence in the military, urging them to see themselves as ambassadors of their brigade, formations and the Nigerian Army.

“Any bad conduct from a soldier draws attention. So, you see yourselves as ambassadors of your brigade and your units and formations and the Nigerian Army at large,” he said.

He urged the troops to listen to their officers, maintain discipline and uphold the professional standards expected of the Nigerian Army.

Mr Shaibu said the welfare of personnel remained important to their ability to perform their responsibilities effectively, adding that troops must also live up to expectations in conduct and commitment.
