Collapsed KWASU road culvert reconstructed nine months after
The culvert linking Shao and Malete roads in the Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State washed away by rain in July 2023 has become motorable again.
The culvert was reconstructed by the Kwara State Government.
Motorists have now returned to the road leading to the Kwara State University in Malete.
KWASU’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, who inspected the road on Wednesday, described the reconstruction as “a promise made and a promise kept” by the state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
Mr Jimoh commended the state government for ensuring the reconstruction.
He said the repair would ensure the safety and comfort of not only members of the university community but road users.
The acting VC added that this was in view of the significance of the road in providing access to that part of the state.
He noted that the reconstructed culvert was done more sturdily than what was washed away during the 2023 rainy season.
”With the growing unpredictability of weather patterns, the new culvert will allow for larger volumes of water to pass through it than before. This will give motorists and other users of the road a higher sense of security even as the rains are about to commence for the year.
”The road will bring a lot of relief to the university community, among other users, especially as the commencement of the second semester is just around the corner,” Prof. Jimoh said.
On July 18, the culvert connecting Shao to Malete road collapsed after heavy rains washed away a large portion of it.
The state ministry of works and transport immediately swung into action by inspecting the collapsed culvert.
Steps were also taken to provide a temporary access road to commuters on the busy route.
The state government also promised to reconstruct it as soon as the rains and volume of water passing through subsided.
