Two children lost their lives on Sunday as the fence of a school, Covenant Point Academy, collapsed in the Amukoko area of Lagos State.

The tragic incident involved a boy, Samat Saheed, and a nine-year-old girl, who were close to the school fence before the collapse.

Residents and witnesses at the scene said the school fence collapsed on the children, instantly crushing them to death.

One of the locals said the boy had his head crushed by the fence on impact, while the girl lost consciousness immediately and died afterward.

A witness disclosed that the police were called to come and handle the situation, which led to the arrest of the owner of the school.

Locals around the vicinity claimed that there were no pillars to hold the school building together, contributing to the collapse of the fence.

“They just stacked blocks. There was no wiring, no pillar, and nothing to hold the building together. That’s why it fell easily,” one of the residents in the vicinity said.

The boy, Samat, was buried the same day following Islamic rights.

Reacting to the incident, the Lagos police spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin disclosed to the press that two suspects have been arrested.

“The owner of the school and one more person have been arrested and will be transferred to the state CIID, Panti, for discreet investigation and prosecution,” Mr Hundeyin said.

This incident becomes one of many building disasters that have rocked the country recently.

Two persons were killed and several others trapped when a seven-storey building on Oba Idowu Oniru Street in Victoria Island, Lagos, collapsed recently.
