The West African College of Physicians (WACP) on Wednesday commenced a re-accreditation exercise for the Paediatrics Department of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti (FETHI), to assess its training capacity and standards.

The exercise was aimed at assessing the department’s facilities, clinical services, training environment, manpower and residency activities to ensure compliance with professional and academic requirements.

Receiving the WACP assessment team, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of FETHI, Prof. Kolawole Ogundipe, welcomed members and expressed appreciation for the college’s continued engagement with the institution.

Mr Ogundipe said the exercise was important to the continued development of the Paediatrics Department and its residency training programme, assuring the team of management’s full cooperation throughout the assessment.

The CMD thanked the WACP team for its assessment and practical recommendations, saying the observations would guide management in improving the working and learning environment for residents and staff.

He also commended members of the Paediatrics Department for their dedication and contributions to the development of the department and hospital, describing their efforts as valuable to its progress.

The team lead, Dr Nma Jiya, appreciated the hospital for the warm reception and said the exercise was designed to objectively assess the department, identify strengths and highlight areas requiring improvement.

Mr Jiya urged members of the department to remain open and cooperative during the exercise, noting that periodic accreditation and re-accreditation were important for maintaining professional standards and strengthening training programmes.

The team subsequently assessed relevant aspects of the department, including facilities, clinical services, manpower, training environment and residency activities, as part of efforts to determine its accreditation status.

At a debriefing session after the assessment, the WACP team commended the department for its well-structured environment, dedicated facilities, teamwork and commitment to residency training and professional development.

The team also made recommendations aimed at further strengthening the training environment and enhancing the development of the department and its residency programme for improved academic outcomes and professional standards.

The exercise ended with the signing of the visitors’ register and a group photograph, marking the conclusion of the re-accreditation assessment conducted by the WACP team in Ido-Ekiti.

The debriefing featured a one-minute silence in honour of the late former Head of the Department of Paediatrics, Dr Ohwofasa Adaje, in recognition of his contributions during his service to the hospital.
