The Colombian government has declared a state of national disaster after the death toll of the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook the country on Monday has risen to 132.

The Colombian Association of Capital Cities stated that five capital cities across the country were on red alert, 86 buildings had collapsed, and seven airports had suspended operations.

It added that at least 570 people had been injured amid ongoing efforts to rescue people from the rubble.

President Abelardo De La Espriella noted that the declaration would allow the government to swiftly respond to the tragedy and assist the most affected communities.

“The national government has all of its capabilities deployed to protect lives, assist affected communities and deliver aid wherever it is needed. The first priority is rescuing the people trapped under the rubble,” Mr Espriella stated.

Fierro Morales, director of the Colombian Geological Service, described the earthquake as the severest in the last decade.

Mr Morales further disclosed that two aftershocks had been recorded so far, with magnitudes of 2.8 and 4.8, adding the latter was “widely felt”.

“This region has experienced earthquakes of considerable magnitude throughout its history. Among the historical precedents is the earthquake that occurred on November 23, 1979, with a magnitude of 7.2,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the U.S. said it would commit $15.5 million in funding to Colombia for shelter, food and protection for victims.

“We are united in prayer with the Colombian people and stand ready to support President (Abelardo de la Espriella) and his government as they assess the needs on the ground,” the Department of State said on Monday.
