Miguel Uribe, a Colombian senator and presidential hopeful, has died two months after he was shot at a rally.

Mr Uribe, 39, died on Monday from gunshot injuries after undergoing multiple surgeries at the Santa Fe de BogotĂ¡ Foundation.

“You will always be the love of my life. Thank you for a life full of love, thank you for being a dad to the girls, the best dad to Alejandro,” MarĂa Claudia Tarazona, Mr Uribe’s wife, wrote on Instagram, posting a photo of herself and her late husband.

She added, “I ask God to show me the way to learn to live without you. Rest in peace, love of my life, I will take care of our children.”

Reacting to Mr Uribe’s death on X, Colombian Vice President Francia MĂ¡rquez said, “Today is a sad day for the country. Violence cannot continue to mark our destiny. Democracy is not built with bullets or blood, it is built with respect, with dialogue.”

On June 7, Mr Uribe, a potential opposition presidential candidate, was shot in the head during a rally in BogotĂ¡, Colombia.

A 15-year-old boy arrested with a “9mm Glock-type firearm” at the scene where Mr Uribe was shot was charged with attempted murder on June 10. The suspect pleaded not guilty.

A Harvard graduate, Mr Uribe was elected to the Senate in 2022. Last year, he announced his candidacy for the 2026 presidential elections.
