Coordinated national action on security necessary to preserve democracy: Ohanaeze chieftain

The Youth Wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has advocated a coordinated national action on security to preserve the nation’s democracy.
The coordinator of the group, South-South zone, Chinedu Arthur-Ugwa, who doubles as the acting chairman of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Bayelsa, stated this in a statement issued in Owerri on Friday to mark Democracy Day.
Mr Arthur-Ugwa stated that only a coordinated response would effectively address the persistent security challenges across different regions of the country and give Nigerians the true sense of freedom associated with democratic governance.
He called for stronger intelligence gathering, better equipment for security personnel, improved inter-agency cooperation, community engagement, and rapid emergency response systems.
He also appealed for the immediate and unconditional release of the kidnapped schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo, in the spirit of the celebration.
“Children belong in classrooms, not in captivity,” Mr Arthur-Ugwa said.
He recommended the installation of CCTV cameras in schools, controlled school access and visitor management, emergency alert and communication systems, and, where necessary, the deployment of trained security personnel.
He called for safe transportation arrangements for students, community security partnerships around schools, and regular security audits and emergency preparedness drills.
“Teachers dedicate themselves to shaping the future of our children and nation and must never become victims of violence because a nation that protects its children protects its future.
“We call on all relevant authorities to intensify efforts to secure their safe return as well as the return of our beloved innocent children,” Mr Arthur-Ugwa said.
He also called for renewed dialogue and lawful measures for the release of the incarcerated leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
According to him, long-standing political and social grievances can be resolved through legal processes, dialogue, and inclusive engagement to reduce tensions and promote peace.
He thanked the president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, John Azuta-Mbata, for his youth-friendly approach to leadership.
Mr Arthur-Ugwa urged the nation’s youths to obtain their permanent voter cards and ensure they participate actively and responsibly in the 2027 general elections.
