Court remands driver of crushed Lexus car that injured Anthony Joshua, killed two of his associates

A Sagamu Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State has remanded the driver of the Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday, injuring former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua.
Spokesperson for the Ogun State police command, Oluseyi Babafemi, in a statement on Friday, said the 46-year-old suspect, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, was arraigned on Friday over the accident that also killed two of the boxer’s associates, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghani.
Mr Babafemi said, “Update: The Ogun State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the Anthony Joshua accident case, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode (male), aged 46, was charged to the Sagamu Magistrate Court today, 2nd January, 2026 and the case has been adjourned to 20th January, 2026.”
According to the command, Mr Adeniyi was charged on four counts, one of which is dangerous driving causing death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F:135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in the state.
Other counts include reckless and negligent driving, contrary to Section 6(1) of the same Act; driving without due care and attention causing bodily harm and damage to property, contrary to Section 7(1); and driving without a valid National Driver’s Licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act.
The court, however, granted the defendant N5,000,000 bail with two sureties but he was remanded pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.
The boxer, who was admitted to Duchess International Hospital in Ikeja, Lagos State following the accident, was discharged on Wednesday after doctors declared him strong enough to continue his recovery at home.
