Court remands man over export of 800kg cannabis

The Lagos Division of the Federal High Court in Lagos State has remanded one Sunday Nnamani at the correctional service for the unlawful export of 800 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa.
The defendant was charged by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), before Justice Ayokunle Faji, on a two-count bordering on drug trafficking.
He pleaded guilty to the charge.
However, the prosecutor, Abu Ibrahim, reviewed the case’s facts through an NDLEA operative, Moses Dogo.
Mr Ibrahim tendered several pieces of evidence, which include the statement of the convict, a test analysis, a request for a scientific aid form, and a transparent pouch, among others, before the court.
The items were admitted by the court and marked as exhibits respectively.
The prosecutor thereafter urged the court to proceed and convict the defendant based on his plea and the evidence adduced by the prosecution.
However, the defence counsel, Anthony Nnam, during a plea for mercy, urged the court to tamper justice with mercy on the convict as he was a first-time offender.
He also begged the court to be lenient on the convict, as he was a father whose children had stopped going to school since his arrest.
Mr Faji, however, convicted the defendant as charged and adjourned the case until November 18 for sentencing.
He ordered that the convict be remanded at the correctional service pending sentence.
