Court remands mason over alleged stealing, mischief

A Life Camp Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, has ordered the remand of a 24-year-old mason, Abubakar Mohammed, for allegedly stealing and vandalising another man’s property worth N850,000.
The magistrate, Hauwa Aboki, ordered the defendant to be remanded in the Correctional Service facility in Keffi, till April 23, for hearing, after he pleaded guilty to the offence.
Ms Aboki also ordered the defendant to submit a written bail application before the court.
The police charged Mr Mohammed of no fixed address with criminal trespass, mischief and theft.
The prosecuting counsel, Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that the complainant, Aliyu Yau of Effab Estate, Abuja, reported the matter at Galadima Police Station on March 5.
Ms Nwachukwu said that the defendant and one Baba, surname unknown and now at large, dishonestly broke into the complainant’s house through the ceiling.
She said that the defendant criminally made away with the electricity wires used in wiring the complainant’s house without his consent.
She told the court that in the process of stealing the wires, the defendant broke the complainant’s chandelier worth N850,000.
Ms Nwachukwu said the defendant was arrested by the estate security and handed over to the police.
She said during the police investigation, the defendant made a confessional statement and the stolen wires were recovered from him.
Ms Nwachukwu said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 79, 343, 382 and 288 of Penal Code Law.
