Court sentences scavenger to two weeks’ community service for stealing compressor, machine

An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, on Thursday sentenced a scavenger, Abeeb Yusuf, to two weeks community service for stealing a fridge compressor and welding machine worth N250,000.

The police charged Yusuf on a one-count charge of stealing.

He pleaded guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Kausarat Ayofe, found him guilty as charged and convicted him .

The court consequently sentenced him to a term of two weeks community service., or its equivalent of custodial sentence, if he is unable to present a surety.

She held that the fridge compressor recovered from the convict should be released to the complainant.

In the charge, the prosecutor, Inspector Olalekan Adegbite, said the defendant committed the offence between January and May 12, at about 8.00 a.m. at the Oke-Bola area of Ibadan.

Mr Adegbite said the convict stole one fridge compressor worth N50,000 and one welding machine worth N200,000, both valued at N250,000.

The property are said to be owned by the complainant, Fasina Dada.

According to the prosecutor, the convict penetrated Dada’s Welder shop through the opening of the under door and removed his fridge compressor and welding machine.

He said that he was caught on the spot while  trying to carry the compressor, and he confessed that he intended to sell same.

According to the prosecutor, there was no trace of the welding machine.
