Court sentences trader to prison for stealing phone

A magistrate’s court in Jos, on Wednesday, sentenced a 22-year-old trader, Bello Mohammed, to two months’ imprisonment for stealing a phone.
The magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, summarily tried and sentenced the convict, who pleaded guilty to the charge.
Ms Bokkos gave the convict an option of a fine of N20,000 or spend one month in prison.
She also ordered the convict to pay the complainant a compensation of N11,500 or spend one month in prison in default.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Ibrahim Gokwat, informed the court that the case was reported at the Nasarawa Gwong Police Station on May 20 by Abdullahi Umar, the complainant.
Mr Gokwat alleged that the convict was given a phone worth N11,500 to make a call, but he ran away with it, sold it, and spent the money.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the Plateau Penal Code Law.
