At least two persons have been feared killed in Rivers State following an attack by suspected cultists.

The gunmen on Tuesday night at about 8:00 p.m. attacked a beer joint in Luubara, Khana Local Government Area, and opened fire at revellers, Peoples Gazette learnt.

The police in Rivers on Wednesday evening confirmed only the death of 35-year-old Bariya Timothy, who was described by the police as a notorious gang leader suspected in deadly violence in Luubara and its environs. Peoples Gazette could not immediately confirm if the victim was a cult member as claimed by the police.

But an eyewitness told local media that two men died on the spot of the incident while two women who sustained serious injuries have been taken to the hospital by police officers attached to Bori.

Rivers police spokesman Nnamdi Omoni said homicide detectives have yet to make any arrests over the shooting but efforts are underway towards a thorough investigation of the matter.

Rivers has witnessed multiple shootings linked to armed gangs operating in various parts of the state, including the capital Port Harcourt. Governor Nyesom Wike said he has given support to the police and other security agencies to check violent crimes across the state.
