The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has raised the alarm over the worsening insecurity in Yorubaland.

The group urged the South-West governors to take urgent and decisive action on the issue.

The group made the call in a communiqué signed by its spokesman, Jare Ajayi, after a caucus meeting held on Wednesday at the Akure residence of its foremost national leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

The group expressed concern over the increasing terror activities in parts of Yorubaland and adjoining states, warning that the situation required immediate and coordinated intervention to prevent further deterioration.

“Afenifere seized the opportunity to also commiserate with the people who have been victims of terrorism in Yorubaland and in other parts of Nigeria. The organisation is highly disturbed by this and called on all concerned not to waste any more time in doing all that is humanly possible to put an end to what now appears to be a genocidal agendum,” the communiqué read.

It called on governors in the six South-West states to strengthen collaboration among themselves and reinforce existing security structures, particularly the Amotekun Corps, through improved funding, equipment, and intelligence gathering.

The group also urged closer cooperation with neighbouring states such as Kwara, Kogi, Edo, and Delta, noting that they host significant Yoruba populations and share forest corridors often exploited by criminals.

It acknowledged the recent steps taken by the President Bola Tinubu led government, including security meetings with service chiefs, as well as ongoing efforts by the military and other security agencies.

The Afenifere also commended the bravery of the security personnel and called for more proactive intelligence-driven operations, stressing that internal collaboration by some community members with kidnappers and bandits must be urgently addressed.

“Government and security agencies, including the military, should look inward as insecurity continues to fester because there are internal collaborators. Such searchlight should be beamed on local communities as there are collaborators among them as well.

“By this, we mean unscrupulous people who are collaborating with kidnappers, bandits and terrorists. Confessions by some of the suspects that have been made public attested to this line of thinking.

“The body reiterates its call on South-West governors to put into practical action the resolutions they made on several security meetings they have held in recent times,” it added.

The group called on political actors to conduct their campaigns peacefully as the 2027 general election approaches, warning against violence, thuggery and character assassination.
