Customs officer killed in car crash
A 54-year-old customs officer, Etteng Ise, has died in a lone motor crash along the Ikom-Calabar Highway in Cross River.
The crash occurred near Alesi Village in Ikom council area at about 2:56 p.m. on Monday.
The police command in Cross River confirmed the death in a statement signed by its spokesman, Sunday Eitokpah, on Monday.
Mr Eitokpah said the deceased, who served at the Mfum Border in Etung council area, reportedly lost control of his vehicle while avoiding a pothole. He said the vehicle veered off the road into the bush and hit a tree.
According to the police, the victim was rushed to Holy Family Hospital, Ikom, where a medical doctor confirmed him dead. Mr Ise’s remains were deposited at the hospital mortuary.
The command commiserated with the deceased’s family, colleagues, and the Nigeria Customs Service, and urged motorists to exercise caution, avoid speeding, and remain vigilant while driving, particularly on highways.
The command also appealed to road users to remain attentive to road conditions and take necessary precautions to prevent avoidable crashes.
