The District of Columbia on Friday filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump administration following the decision to take control of Washington police amid efforts to federalise the country’s capital city.

The decision to sue the Trump administration came less than 24 hours after the U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi issued an order placing the D.C Police Department under the control of the federal government, solidifying Mr Trump’s earlier decree.

Ms Bondi also appointed Terry Cole, the head of the Drug Enforcement Agency as the new “emergency police commissioner”.

In response, D.C. attorney general, Brian Schwalb filed an emergency suit to stop the Trump administration from going ahead with its intensified efforts to take control of the capital, stating the order issued by Ms Bondi “far exceeds” the president’s authority.

Such an attempt to “upend the command structure of the Police Department” risks “endangering the safety of the public and law enforcement officers alike,” the suit indicated, using the Trump administration’s argument for public safety against it.

Subsequently, the suit asks the Federal District Court for an injunction against Ms Bondi’s order and a declaration that the administration’s actions were unconstitutional and a violation of the Home Rule Act.
