Mr Gabaya said the move aimed to boost council development through federal partnerships while making a significant realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.

John Gabaya, chairman of the Bwari council in Abuja, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.

Mr Gabaya, in a statement, said the move aimed to boost council development through federal partnerships while making a significant realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.

Mr. Gabaya, the incumbent chairman of the council, was elected on the PDP platform in 2019 and is finishing his second tenure in June.

He is seeking election to the House of Representatives for the AMAC/Bwari constituency in the 2027 election.

The chairman said his decision followed fervent prayers, wide consultations, and strict compliance with all constitutional provisions of the parties involved.

“I have wholeheartedly embraced the APC as a platform for advancing peace, unity, and development in the Bwari Area Council, Abuja,” said Mr Gabaya. “It is for better collaborations with the federal government, to ensure long-term council development, and this was followed by extensive consultations with stakeholders.”

Mr Gabaya expressed affection and respect for his former associates in the PDP, stating that his defection does not translate into enmity, but rather into a broader perspective on the collective interest in the council’s development.
