Dembélé fires PSG past Arsenal to take first-leg lead in Champions League semi-final

Ousmane Dembélé’s early goal handed Paris Saint-Germain a narrow but crucial 1-0 win over Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg, ending the Gunners’ 17-match unbeaten home run in European competition.
In a clash between two clubs often seen as nearly men on the continental stage, it was PSG—reaching their fourth semi-final in six seasons—who struck the first blow.
Just four minutes in, Dembélé combined sharply with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before rifling a left-footed shot off the post to stun the Emirates crowd. It was the French winger’s 25th goal of the calendar year and his 11th goal contribution of the tournament, setting a new PSG record.
Luis Enrique’s men pressed aggressively in the opening half, and Arsenal struggled to match their tempo.
David Raya was called upon to deny Kvaratskhelia and later produced a stunning save to stop Désiré Doué.
The hosts eventually grew into the contest, with Gabriel Martinelli coming close just before half-time, only to be denied by a sharp one-handed save from Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Just after the restart, Arsenal thought they had equalised through Mikel Merino’s superb header from a Declan Rice free-kick, but the goal was chalked off for offside.
Nonetheless, the disallowed effort sparked life into the Gunners, and Donnarumma had to be alert again to keep out Leandro Trossard’s powerful strike.
PSG’s night took a slight downturn when Dembélé was forced off with a knock and replaced by Bradley Barcola. The substitute nearly made an instant impact, setting up João Neves for a chance that flew over the bar. Neves came even closer minutes later, narrowly missing the far post after a sweeping PSG move. Gonçalo Ramos also threatened late, rattling the crossbar with an improvised toe-poke.
In the end, Dembélé’s early goal stood as the winner, giving PSG their second win in five matches across all competitions.
For Arsenal, the defeat ended their 12-game unbeaten run, and they’ll now face a significant challenge in Paris next week as they chase their first UEFA Champions League final appearance in nearly two decades.
