Democracy Day: Edo speaker urges Nigerians to embrace unity

The speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has urged residents of the state and Nigerians at large to uphold national values, promote cultural heritage, and live in harmony as the country marks Democracy Day.
Mr Agbebaku made the call during a Democracy Day celebration with his constituents in Benin on Friday.
He acknowledged the freedom and opportunities democracy has provided for Nigerians.
According to the speaker, the theme of this year’s celebration, “27 Years of Uninterrupted Democratic Rule”, highlights the impact of democratic governance on the well-being of citizens at all levels and across the three arms of government.
He traced Nigeria’s political evolution since independence, noting the challenges and achievements that had shaped the country’s current democratic dispensation.
Mr Agbebaku stated that governance that is not people-centred through policies, programmes, projects, and human capital development cannot be regarded as true democracy.
He identified inclusion, unity, accountability, flexibility, and transparency as key pillars of democratic governance.
“This year’s theme is a call for both citizens and public office holders to reflect on the electoral process and the importance of competent and responsible leadership in public service.
“We must unite in the patriotic pursuit of purposeful leadership.
“The world we see reflects the country we build. We must invest in our values, promote our cultural heritage, and live with dignity, as these define our true identity,” he said.
