The Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran, has called on the residents of the state to undergo regular diabetes screening and management, warning that the disease’s prevalence in the state was “alarming.”

Mr Labaran was speaking to journalists during events marking the World Diabetes Day in Kano on Saturday.

He said that early detection was crucial to avoid complications, urging the public to visit hospitals and the state’s expanded network of diabetes centres.

He stated that diabetes now affects all age groups, prompting the government to increase the number of dedicated centres from 50 to 110.

Citing national statistics, he said more than six per cent of Nigerians live with the condition, underscoring the need for heightened awareness and prompt medical intervention.

The commissioner called for massive public enlightenment campaigns on diabetes symptoms to curb its spread and encourage early treatment.
