Donald Trump appoints Mike Huckabee as U.S. ambassador to Israel

President-elect Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas, as his ambassador to Israel.
The appointment came at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East following the escalation of conflict in Gaza after the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
“Mike has been a great public servant, governor, and leader in faith for many years,” Mr Trump said in a statement. “He loves Israel, and the people of Israel love him. Mike will work tirelessly to bring about peace in the Middle East!”
Mr Huckabee has long been an outspoken advocate for Israel, voicing unwavering support for the country, especially during the ongoing Gaza conflict.
In August 2023, Mr Huckabee called on Hamas to “release all hostages and unconditionally surrender,” reaffirming his stance on Israel’s right to defend itself.
His appointment reflects Mr Trump’s continued alignment with Israel, reinforcing his image as one of the country’s strongest allies.
The former governor, who served from 1996 to 2007, is known for his evangelical Christian faith, which has strongly shaped his foreign policy views, particularly concerning the Middle East.
During his political career, Mr Huckabee also made several runs for the Republican presidential nomination.
His staunch advocacy for Israel has earned him significant recognition within pro-Israel circles, both in the U.S. and abroad.
Mr Huckabee’s new role will be pivotal in navigating U.S. relations with Israel amid the ongoing crisis.
While Mr Trump has been vocal in his support for Israel’s defence, he has been less specific about a long-term strategy for resolving the Gaza conflict.
Earlier this week, Mr Trump announced that Representative Elise Stefanik of New York, another outspoken supporter of Israel, would be appointed as UN ambassador.
