Doyin Okupe resigns as Peter Obi’s campaign DG after money laundering conviction

The Director General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), Doyin Okupe, has stepped aside from the Obi/Baba-Ahmed campaign.
His resignation became inevitable following his conviction by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja for money laundering and misappropriation of federal funds on Monday.
In a letter he shared via his Twitter account, Mr Okupe said he is seeking to clear his name from the money laundering scandal that has lurked the courts since 2018.
“You will recall that I briefed you yesterday about my personal travails in seeking justice and clearing my name using the Nigerian Legal System to pursue same.
“I have invested too much in your campaign to allow my personal travails to become a source of distraction.
“In the circumstances, I have opted to step aside and plead that you appoint a new Campaign DG who can continue the assignment with zero distractions,” the letter read.
Although Mr Okupe’s letter says he wants to “clear his name,” his actions prove otherwise as he hurriedly paid the fine of N13 million imposed on him as punishment by the court as opposed to filing an appeal to quash the High Court’s judgement.
