Dozens killed in Mozambique’s cyclone ‘Chido’
The Mozambique National Institute of Risk and Disaster Management on Tuesday said at least 34 people have lost their lives in an unfortunate incident caused by an intense storm recorded in the Central Africa country on Sunday.
Cyclone ‘Chido’ made a heavy landfall after wreaking havoc in the Indian territory of Mayotte, which lies in the Indian Ocean channel between Mozambique and Madagascar.
Hundreds of people have also been feared dead in the French region of Mayotte, with the INGD officials citing the incident in both places as heartbreaking, further warning of the possibility of a rising death toll in Mozambique.
Over 34,000 Mozambicans have lost their homes in the 260km/h cyclone. Destroying schools, health facilities, and fishing boats.
Electricity and communications have also been upended, with state-owned power company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) announcing that around 200,000 customers are without power.
Tommaso Della Longa, the International Federation of Red Cross spokesperson, told the BBC that the cyclone had destroyed a major part of the Mayotte region.
