DRC FA president handed life sentence for financial crimes

The president of the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFOOT), Jean-Guy Mayolas, has been handed a life sentence after being found guilty of multiple financial crimes.
He was convicted of financial crimes, including money laundering, embezzlement, and forgery linked to the misuse of about $1.3 million in funds provided by FIFA for football development.
The verdict was delivered by a court in Brazzaville on Tuesday following an eight-month investigation into Mr Mayolas’s activities and a wider probe into the country’s football governing body.
The court delivered the verdict in his absence and subsequently sentenced him to life imprisonment.
The investigation also implicated two other officials who were convicted in connection with the case.
They include the federation’s Secretary-General, Badji Mombo Wantete, and the Treasurer, Raoul Kanda, who were each sentenced to five years in prison.
Authorities said the two officials were found to have played roles in the financial irregularities uncovered during the investigation.
