Driver jailed nine months for swindling vehicle owner

An Area Court in Jos, Plateau State, on Tuesday sentenced a 30-year-old man, Nasiru Adamu,to nine months imprisonment for swindling a businessman of N100,000.
The judge, Shawomi Bokkos, sentenced the convict after he pleaded guilty to the offence of criminal breach of trust and deceit and begged the court for leniency.
The judge also gave the convict an option of N20,000 fine or nine months imprisonment in default.
She further ordered the convict to pay a compensation of N 70,000 to the complainant.
Earlier, the police prosecutor, Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported at the ‘B’ Division Police Station on December 12 by Nyior Wisdom.
He said the accused was given a vehicle to shuttle the Jos–Abuja route and to remit the sum of N25,000 weekly to the complainant.
“But the accused, however, absconded with the vehicle for four weeks and failed to remit the agreed sum which accrued to N100,000,” Mr Gokwat said.
The prosecutor further told the court that during the police investigation, the convict confessed to having absconded with the vehicle and converted it to personal use.
The offence, he said, contravened the Plateau State Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria.
