Driver sentenced to years in prison for stealing tiles

The Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced a driver, Edward Isaac, to two years’ imprisonment for stealing cartons of floor tiles worth N880,000.
The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, sentenced Mr Isaac after he pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal conspiracy and stealing.
Delivering judgement, the magistrate held that the prosecution had established its case beyond reasonable doubt and also condemned the convict’s betrayal of trust.
The court held that such acts undermined workplace discipline and accountability.
He consequently sentenced the convict to two years’ imprisonment with hard labour, with no option of a fine.
Mr Emmanuel noted that the punishment would deter others.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Chidi Leo, told the court that the complainant, David Silas of D&C Construction Firm, located at Barnawa, Kaduna, reported the matter at the police station on August 12.
Mr Leo said he reported the matter after a worker informed him of a theft at the company’s warehouse, where the worker saw the defendant and another person at large loading 40 cartons of floor tiles into a truck without authorisation.
He said police immediately arrested the defendant while his accomplice fled.
According to the prosecutor, during the investigation, Mr Isaac confessed that he planned to sell the tiles to Dauda Bege.
The offences contravene the provisions of the Kaduna State Penal Code 2017.
