The police commissioner in Ebonyi, Adaku Uche-Anya, has urged officers to eschew extortion and unprofessional conduct during the yuletide.

Ms Uche-Anya gave the warning in a Christmas message in Abakaliki on Wednesday.

She urged the cops to be civil in the discharge of their duties.

“You must eschew all forms of extortion and corruption; do not use your duty posts as a means of extortion, and ensure an effective supervision of your subordinates,” she said.

The commissioner further directed that the existing security deployments should be strengthened to guarantee adequate safety and security throughout the festive period.

Ms Uche-Anya urged officers to deepen community engagement, remain accessible, and build trust in order to enhance intelligence gathering and public cooperation.

“The command, through this medium, wishes to warn members of the public against the use of fireworks during this festive season due to their attendant dangers, including fire outbreaks and panic caused by explosive sounds.

“The burning of tyres on roads is strictly prohibited, while masquerade activities must not infringe on the rights of others or obstruct the road during performances,” she warned.

The police chief reiterated the command’s readiness to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure a hitch-free celebration.

“You should promptly report any suspicious activities or incidents to the nearest police station or via the command’s control room on 07064515001,” she added.
