ECOWAS swears in five judges for non-renewable four-year term

The Economic Community of West African States on Tuesday swore in five judges for a single term of four years, which cannot be renewed.
The new judges, Henrietta Uzoamaka Didigu (Nigeria), Désiré Henri Aihou (Benin), Awa Bah (The Gambia), Charlyne M. Brumskine (Liberia) and Yaouza Ouro-Sama (Togo) took the oath of office in Abuja in a ceremony presided over by Senegal’s president, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, who chairs the ECOWAS authority of heads of state and government.
Mr Faye enjoined the new judges to be impartial in their administration of justice, stressing that “the reputation of the Court depends on the quality of its decisions and the trust it inspires.”
Justice Mouhamadou Mansour Mbaye, chair of the ECOWAS judicial council from Senegal, emphasised that the judges must maintain independence and “integrity beyond reproach” in their new roles.
Dignitaries who attended the event include Birame Diop, president of the ECOWAS Commission; Hadja Mémounatou Ibrahima, speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament; and Cheikh NIANG, among others.
