Edo 2020: Delta approves N456m reward for medal-winning athletes

Delta State athletes who won medals at the last National Sports Festival held in Edo State will receive cash rewards totalling N456 million, the state government has announced.
The state Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, disclosed this to newsmen in Asaba on Wednesday.
He said it is part of the decisions reached at the State Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday in Government House.
Mr Aniagwu said the government decided to fulfil the promise made to the athletes because of the honour they brought to the state and to encourage them to do more.
He said this was despite the times being hard.
According to Mr Aniagwu, before the athletes proceeded to Edo 2020, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, promised that each medal would attract some prize.
He said he also made the promise in 2019 in Abuja.
“Because of that promise, the athletes repeated the same feat and the governor approved funds to be paid. It is going to cost us about N456 million to settle that,” he said.
