Edo lawmakers impeach Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu for leaking official secrets
The Edo House of Assembly has impeached Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu over allegations of gross misconduct.
The Edo lawmakers arrived at the decision after impeachment proceedings began by voting process during its plenary session, which started at 9:41 a.m. on Monday.
A total of 18 out of 20 lawmakers present reportedly voted in favour of Shaibu’s impeachment, while one lawmaker voted against it.
The deputy governor’s impeachment came after a seven-man investigative panel set up by the Edo chief judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, to probe the allegation submitted its report.
The seven-man panel, led by Stephen Omonua-led, concluded that Mr Shaibu was guilty of disclosing official secrets to the public.
Mr Shaibu, whose relationship with Governor Godwin Obaseki turned sour after declaring his ambition to succeed him, had been served an impeachment notice by the lawmakers.
Mr Shaibu is the state governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, having won a parallel primary in February 2024.
