The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that Augustine Eguavoen will continue in his role as head coach of the Super Eagles.

Eguavoen took charge of the Super Eagles in an interim capacity after the NFF failed to appoint a substantive head coach in time for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

However, there were reports that Eguavoen had left the job after the Super Eagles’ 0-0 draw with the Amavubi of Rwanda.

The 58-year-old, in temporary charge of the squad, which he had led three times previously, steered the three-time African champions to a 3-0 defeat of Benin Republic and a scoreless draw with Rwanda in Matchdays 1 and 2 earlier this month.

A statement by Ademola Olajire, NFF’s director of communications, on Thursday, confirmed that the federation had approved Eguavoen’s continuation as head coach of the team.

“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation on Thursday approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee.

“The approval is for the Federation’s Technical Director, Coach Augustine Eguavoen, to continue in his role as Head Coach of the Super Eagles.

“He will lead the team in its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Libya next month,” he said.

Mr Olajire stated that Eguavoen and the current technical crew, which also includes Fidelis Ilechukwu, Daniel Ogunmodede, Olatunji Baruwa, and Tomaz Zorec, would continue to work together.

He added that they would also take charge of the Super Eagles B team for the qualifying campaign for the 2025 African Nations Championship, otherwise known as CHAN.

Mr Olajire also noted that with the departure of Randy Waldrum, the executive committee approved the recommendation of the technical and development sub-committee for Justin Madugu to lead the senior national women’s football team.

He explained that Madugu and the remaining technical crew would take charge of the senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, pending the appointment of a substantive Head Coach.

Super Falcons’ next major engagement is the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals, taking place in Morocco in the summer of 2025.
