Ekiti govt begins dredging of waterways to prevent flooding
The Ekiti State government has intensified dredging of waterways and river channels across the state to improve water flow and prevent flooding in vulnerable communities.
Sunday Adunmo, general manager of the Ekiti State Environmental Protection Agency (EKSEPA), disclosed this in an interview on Friday in Ado-Ekiti.
Mr Adunmo said the exercise was ongoing in Ado-Ekiti metropolis, some communities in Ido-Ekiti, and other flood-prone areas.
He said the dredging aimed to clear waterways of silt, refuse, and other obstructions that could restrict water flow during rainfall.
The EKSEPA general manager said dredging was part of the measures the state government is adopting to protect lives, property, and farmlands from flooding.
He urged residents to stop dumping refuse in waterways and drainage channels, warning that such practices could block water flow and worsen severe flooding during heavy rains.
“We are currently dredging some waterways in Ado-Ekiti and communities in Ido-Ekiti to ensure free flow of water and reduce flooding.
“We appeal to residents to stop dumping refuse in waterways and drainages. When these channels are blocked, water cannot flow freely,” he said.
Mr Adunmo also advised residents against constructing houses, fences and other structures on waterways.
He said EKSEPA would continue monitoring flood-prone areas and implementing necessary environmental measures to minimise flooding across the state.
He urged residents to support the government’s efforts by keeping waterways and drainage channels free of refuse and complying with environmental regulations.
