Ekiti man arrested for multimillion-naira fraud

A 45-year-old man, Oladipo Tope, was on Wednesday arraigned before the Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court for conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence and fraudulent conversion involving N9 million.
The defendant is facing trial on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence and fraudulent conversion.
The prosecutor, Elijah Adejare, told the court that the defendant and others at large committed the offences on November 11, 2025, within the Ado-Ekiti magisterial district.
Mr Elijah alleged that the defendant conspired with others to defraud a resident, Babatunde Rotimi.
He further alleged that the defendant fraudulently obtained N9 million from the complainant under the false pretence of selling him a Hyundai car (2013 model).
The prosecutor also alleged that the defendant fraudulently converted the N9 million, which belonged to the complainant, to his personal use.
According to him, the offences contravened sections 421,328, 329(3), 295 and 302(6) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The defendant’s lawyer, Balogun Japhet, urged the court to grant his client bail, promising he would not jump bail.
The chief magistrate, Kehinde Awosika, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
She adjourned the case until August 24 for hearing.
