Over 1,000 residents have benefitted from the Lagos State Government’s Eko Cares/Eko Listens Financial Assistance Programme.

The beneficiaries received cheques ranging from ₦300,000 to ₦1.5 million to support businesses, healthcare needs, and persons with disabilities. A total of ₦460 million was disbursed.

The event, held on Wednesday at the Blue Roof Arena, Ikeja, drew hundreds of grateful residents who applauded Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for providing hope and relief amid ongoing economic challenges.

Mr Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor Dr Obafemi Hamzat, expressed satisfaction with the transparent disbursement process and urged beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly to become self-reliant and productive members of society.

“This initiative is about giving people a hand up, not just a handout, we want every Lagosian to feel seen, supported and empowered to take control of their future. This year, the government increased the fund to N1.6 billion from N1.4 billion last year a clear demonstration of our commitment to inclusion and compassion,” he said

Mr Hamzat commended President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative, noting that the reforms were critical to reshaping Nigeria’s economy and empowering citizens.

“The reforms being implemented by the Federal Government are designed to secure a brighter future. What we are doing today complements that vision providing a seed of hope that must be nurtured to bloom,” he said

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr Afolabi Tajudeen, in his welcome address, said the initiative embodied the Mr Sanwo-Olu administration’s inclusive governance ideals as enshrined in the T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda.

“Eko Listens is not just a programme; it is a promise fulfilled; it reflects a government that listens with intent, responds with compassion, and acts with purpose. Since its launch in 2020, this scheme has restored hope to thousands of vulnerable Lagosians,” he said.

He, however, disclosed that the selection process was rigorous, with beneficiaries drawn from over 5,000 applicants across the 57 local councils, while 46 per cent of the recipients were women.

“This support is more than financial aid, it is a seed of opportunity. Nurture it, grow it, and let it become a beacon of hope for others,” Mr Tajudeen advised the beneficiaries.

Some recipients, including small business owners and persons living with disabilities, expressed gratitude to the state government for alleviating their financial burdens.

The Eko Cares financial aid initiative, introduced in 2020, provides support for healthcare, education, business start-ups, housing, and other welfare needs.

It continues to serve as a cornerstone of Lagos State’s people-centred governance approach.

“Governance is most impactful when it touches lives directly. That is the Lagos we are building one of inclusion, compassion, and shared progress. Truly, Lagos is working,” Mr Tajudeen said.

A beneficiary from Kosofe, Funke Adeyemi, said, “ I can now expand my tailoring business and employ two apprentices.”
