Emir of Gumel, Sani II, dies in Egypt

The Emir of Gumel, Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, has reportedly died on Thursday in Cairo, Egypt, following his 45-year reign as monarch of Gumel in Jigawa State.

Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Gombe State, confirmed the death of the Jigawa monarch.

“Inna lil Laahi wa inna ilaiHi Raaji’un!. It is with profound sadness and total submission to the will of Allah that I received the news of the passing of His Royal Highness, Alhaji Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, CON, the Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State,” he said.

He said the monarch passed away today, Thursday, in Cairo, Egypt, noting that his reign began on December 16, 1980, and ended on Thursday, September 3, 2026.

Mr Ibrahim also extended his heartfelt condolences to the late emir’s immediate family, the Gumel Emirate Council, His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, CFR, the government and people of Jigawa State, and the entire nation.

“The late Emir was a distinguished scholar, a beacon of wisdom, and a father to all. He dedicated his life to the service of his people, the promotion of peace, education, and the preservation of our cultural values,” he said.

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the Vice-Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), also posted about the death of the Jigawa monarch on his X page on Thursday.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. I am deeply saddened by the passing of His Royal Highness, the Emir of Gumel, Alhaji (Dr.) Ahmad Muhammad Sani II.

“We shall always remember His Highness as a distinguished and far-sighted leader who guided the Gumel Emirate to remarkable heights over 45 years of dedicated service,” he said.
