The police commissioner in Enugu, Lawal Abubakar, says he will sanction corrupt officers, urging cops in the state to maintain a high level of discipline, professionalism, and firmness while carrying out their duties.

The commissioner called on security stakeholders and residents to remain supportive by promptly providing credible security information and intelligence for effective policing.

The appeal is contained in a statement by the spokesman for the police command in Enugu, Daniel Ndukwe, on Wednesday after the police chief completed the tour of the five police area commands.

Mr Abubakar went on a familiarisation tour of Agbani, Enugu Metro, Nsukka, Oji-River, and Udenu police area commands.

The police commissioner noted that the tour was part of his “whole-of-society approach” to policing and the maximum utilisation of the renewed community policing strategy of the Nigeria Police.

He used the opportunity of the tour to lecture his personnel and, at the same time to interact with security stakeholders.

The stakeholders were made up of executive chairmen and councillors of council areas, members of the Enugu House of Assembly, and traditional rulers.

He also interacted with religious, market, and transport union leaders and representatives of sister security agencies, neighbourhood watch groups, and forest guards within the area commands.

While responding to presentations by stakeholders, the commissioner instructed police officers to ensure that they exhibit the highest level of discipline at all times.

He warned that anything to the contrary would be met with appropriate sanctions.
