The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, has charged supervisory officers to put necessary measures in place to ensure effective coordination of policing operations during the “ember months.”

Mr Giwa gave the charge on Thursday at a strategic conference held in Enugu for senior police officers as part of the measures to strengthen security and public safety during the ember months.

He said that the conference was also aimed at reviewing the command’s security strategies and operations across the state as the Yuletide approaches.

He described the ember months as “a critical period, requiring heightened vigilance, strategic policing actions and intelligence-led operations.”

The police boss said that there would be proactive deployment of personnel to prevent crime and maintain public order.

He directed the operational supervisory officers to strengthen intelligence gathering, surveillance, visibility patrols, stop-and-search operations and other crime-prevention measures within their areas of responsibility.

“I have directed the officers to sustain close engagements with communities and other stakeholders while upholding professionalism, respect for human rights and strict adherence to the rule of law.

“The command is assuring residents and visitors that it remains fully prepared to safeguard lives and property throughout the period.

“However, we must stress that security during the period is a shared responsibility, requiring sustained collaboration between the police, communities and other stakeholders,” Mr Giwa said.

The conference was attended by deputy and assistant commissioners of police, area commanders, divisional police officers, heads of formations, tactical and operational units, as well as other sectional heads of the command.
