The Enugu government has pledged to intensify efforts to improve sexual, reproductive, maternal and neonatal health services across healthcare facilities.

The commissioner for health, George Ugwu, made the commitment on Friday at a stakeholders’ meeting on the dissemination of findings from the SRMNH Mid-line Assessment Survey in Enugu.

The meeting, supported by the Clinton Health Access Initiative, was held to review progress, identify gaps and develop strategies for improving access to quality and sustainable health services for women and newborns.

Mr Ugwu commended CHAI for conducting the assessment, describing it as a significant step towards developing a stronger and more resilient health commodity market for sustained delivery of SRMNH services.

He also commended Governor Peter Mbah for providing an enabling environment for health programmes and interventions in the state.

The commissioner said the administration’s continued investment in healthcare was driving improvements in infrastructure and service delivery.

“Soon, the state’s 300-bed Enugu International Hospital will commence operations, and it is another significant milestone in the administration’s efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery in Enugu state,” he said.

Earlier, the reproductive health coordinator in the health ministry, Douglas Nwagbo, said the meeting was designed to examine the findings of the midline assessment and determine areas requiring further intervention.

Mr Nwagbo urged policymakers to use the evidence generated by the assessment to guide future programmes and strengthen SRMNH outcomes.

He said implementation focused on four key areas: coordination, data-system strengthening, products and supply chain, and product introduction.

According to him, the four areas were designed to address critical gaps in the health system and improve the availability and accessibility of essential commodities needed for reproductive, maternal and neonatal healthcare.

The meeting featured presentations on the SRMNH mid-line assessment findings, with participants identifying areas requiring sustained attention, including human resources, equipment and essential consumables.

Stakeholders also reviewed SRMNH service delivery and health infrastructure, highlighting existing strengths, challenges and opportunities for improvement.

The meeting is expected to contribute to efforts to strengthen the state’s health system and ensure sustained access to quality healthcare services for women, mothers and newborns.
