The Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN) has expressed concern over the erosion of traditional values among Nigerian youths.

Samuel Sanusi, general secretary/CEO of BSN, made this assertion during an interview with journalists on Sunday in Lagos.

Mr Sanusi also reacted to a news report indicating that many youths in the eastern part of the country have abandoned Christianity in favour of the religion of their ancestors.

He acknowledged that the situation in the country is alarming, but emphasised that the only solution to the nation’s challenges is through embracing and worshipping the true God.

“Our value system has been eroded over the years to the point where it is difficult to differentiate between a believer and a non-believer,” Mr Sanusi said.

He added that many people have lost their conscience.

According to him, much evil is being perpetuated in ways that are scandalous to the younger generation. 

However, he pointed out that traditional African cultures, prior to the advent of Christianity, upheld values that respected human life and encouraged living a virtuous life.

Mr Sanusi stressed that cultivating the habit of daily reading of the scriptures and living by the Word of God is now more important than ever.

“It is time to go back to God.

“If we really want a solution in our world, we need to return to what we have been neglecting — the Word of God. The solution is in God,” Mr Sanusi said.

He also expressed concern over the impact of certain films, which glorify wealth gained through rituals and occult practices, leaving negative impressions on the younger generation.

He explained that traditional values, once taught in villages — such as the condemnation of theft and the sacredness of life — are being forgotten.

Mr Sanusi concluded by stating that the nation must return to God for solutions to its challenges, both at the individual and national level.

“Our youths are making mistakes by not acknowledging the one true God and creator of the universe,” he said.
