The Delta State police command has arrested one Michael Ezenwai for allegedly killing a 26-year-old woman, Christabel Egedefe, in Agbor during his attempt to steal her motorcycle while robbing a house on October 23, 2025.

In a video posted on X on Friday, spokesperson for the command, Bright Edafe, said the suspect had escaped the Oko Correctional Centre in Benin City during the EndSARS jailbreak in October 2020.

According to Mr Edafe, the 30-year-old suspect was at the time remanded for allegedly killing Uwaila Omorzuwa, a 200-level student of the University of Benin, earlier in 2020, in a church before escaping jail.

Mr Edafe said, “This suspect in Agbor, on October 23, went to rob occupants of a house where he met this girl. In a quest to rob her of her motorcycle, he pushed her, she hit her head on the ground, and according to him, he thought the girl had fainted, so he used a blanket to cover her until she eventually died.

“Now, when this suspect was eventually arrested, he was asked, ‘why did you kill the girl?’ Only for this suspect to indict the innocent father of the girl whom he had killed. The father was detained on the strength of his confession. It was after six days that he was eventually released. The suspect said he didn’t want to suffer alone because the father threatened him, that he was going to kill him, that’s why he said he will implicate the innocent father.

“This suspect was among the syndicate that murdered that girl in Edo State, just before the EndSARS protest. He was among the gang who went to that church and murdered that girl. He was remanded. While he was in prison remand, was when the EndSARS jailbreak occurred at Oko prison and he escaped. Lo and behold, he has come back again, after taking the life of another innocent, promising girl.”

The suspect, during interrogation, stated that it wasn’t his intention to kill the victim, explaining that while he was struggling with her for the key of the motorcycle, he overpowered her and pushed her, and she fell to the ground on her head, adding that he also stole her phone.

He said, “It’s not my intention to kill her, both of us were dragging. I asked her to give me the key but the girl was dragging with me. So, I used my own power to beat the girl and push her, she then fell down. Unfortunately, she didn’t talk again, I then used blanket.”

The suspect, who confirmed his wrong accusation against the victim’s father, explained how he was arrested, saying, “The next day, when I wanted to go and sell the girl’s phone, the Hausa boy I wanted to sell the phone to, went to go and call police, then they arrested me.”
