Esport tournament ‘The International’ to pay winners $180 million

The total Prize Pool of $180 million is said to be $70 million more than other top esporting events.

The organisers of eSport world championship tournament ‘The International’ will pay an overall price money of $180 million to winners, MejoresApuestas.com reveals. 

An annual eSports world championship hosted by Valve, the developers of Dota 2, ‘The International’ will have esports players from around the world battle in video game Dota 2 for the prize money.

Over the years, ‘The International’ has significantly increased its prize money to become the largest tournament in the eSports industry.

The total Prize Pool is $70 million more than other top esporting events.
Data by MejoresApuestas showed the game hit over $276 million in cumulative prize money, almost matching the combined prize of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Fortnite, and League of Legends.

MejoresApuestas reports that the prize pool is one of the most critical factors considered by players before deciding if or not to compete at the tournament.

First held in 2011 with a cash prize offering of    $1.6 million, the organisers subsequently increased the the prize.

The International is believed to be the most successful  crowdfunded prize pools in eSports history.

In 2021, this figure was boosted by another $6 million, with the prize pool reaching $40 million in value.

The tournament features 18 teams; 12 based on final results from the Dota Pro Circuit and six more from winning regional playoffs from the North America, South America, Southeast Asia, China, Eastern Europe, and Western Europe regions. 

Dota 2 players have competed in 1,549 tournaments to date.

With $7.1 million in total prize money, Danish gamer Johan “N0tail” Sundstein still tops the list of the most successful Dota 2 player globally.

Jesse “JerAx” Vainikka and Anathan “ana” Pham follow with $6.4 million and $6 million in earnings, respectively.
