Nicknamed ‘The Steal Giant’, the Estadio BBVA is one of three stadiums in Mexico designated to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, alongside Estadio Akron and Estadio Azteca.

Estadio BBVA is unique for its iconic mountain backdrop, as it is built directly in view of the Cerro de la Silla, offering one of the world’s most naturalistic stadium views.

The stadium features modern, steel-heavy architecture, with a curved exterior and a futuristic design that makes the arena visibly distinctive.

Located in Guadalupe, Nuevo León, construction of the stadium began in 2011. It was completed and opened four years later in August 2015, at a cost of $200 million.

The stadium has a seating capacity of over 53,000.

Over a third of the stadium’s landmass is green space, exceeding the current regulatory requirement. The green areas filter rainwater as part of the venue’s sustainability measures.

The Monterrey Football Club was recognised by the Ministry of Tourism of Nuevo León with the Silver Level Sustainable Tourism Seal in February, which distinguishes organisations that implement and promote good environmental practices.

According to the club, this badge seeks to promote sustainability in the tourism sector, reduce operating costs, and contribute to fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

It has been the home of Mexico’s Liga MX side C.F. Monterrey since 2015, after the club ended its 63-year run at the Estadio Tecnológico.

In February 2026, Monterrey F.C. opened its first nursing booth at the Estadio BBVA, allowing parents to breastfeed their children privately.

“At the Monterrey Football Club, we understand that living football is also sharing family moments safely, so we have implemented a new project that reaffirms our commitment to the inclusion, respect and dignity of women,” the club said.

“We proudly announce the installation of the first nursing booth in the BBVA Stadium, which provides a comfortable, safe and private space for nursing mothers to feed their babies and / or express and preserve their milk safely during the Rayadas and Rayados matches.”

During the World Cup, the arena will host four matches, including group stage fixtures between Tunisia vs Japan, South Africa vs South Korea, Tunisia vs Sweden and a round of 32 match.

The stadium has hosted other major tournaments, including the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship and two matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup inter-confederation play-offs.
