Estate agent, 36, in court over alleged N150,000 rent scam

A 36-year-old estate agent, Elom Amobi, on Thursday appeared before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State for allegedly obtaining N150,000 under the pretence of renting an apartment to an accommodation seeker.
Amobi, whose address was not provided, is facing a three-count charge of stealing, breach of peace, and obtaining money under false pretence.
The Ota Magistrates’ Courttold the court that the defendant committed the offences on September 21 at Animashaun Estate, off Idiroko Road, Ota.
Mr Adaraloye alleged that the defendant fraudulently obtained the sum of N150,000 from one Adegoke Fatimo under the pretence of renting a self-contained apartment without the consent of the landlord.
He added that the defendant converted the money to his personal use without fulfilling the terms of the agreement.
The prosecutor added that the defendant also behaved in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by constituting a nuisance in the area.
He said the offences contravened Sections 249(d), 390, and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, O. O. Fadairo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000, with one surety in like sum.
The case was adjourned until December 3 for further hearing.
