Ethics Committee was set to release critical report on Matt Gaetz: Report

The Justice Department investigated allegations that Mr Gaetz had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a girl and potentially violated federal sex trafficking laws.

• November 14, 2024

The House Ethics Committee was on the verge of releasing a scathing report on Representative Matt Gaetz just as the Florida congressman suddenly exited Congress on Wednesday.

The highly anticipated report, which was expected to be voted on Friday, had been investigating serious allegations against Mr Gaetz, including claims of sexual misconduct, drug use, and accepting improper gifts.

According to CNN, sources familiar with the investigation revealed that the Ethics Committee had a narrow window to release its findings, which had been delayed for months due to House rules preventing negative reports close to elections.

With Mr Gaetz’s resignation just two days after President-elect Donald Trump appointed him to serve as attorney general, the investigation into the congressman has come to an abrupt halt, leaving the fate of the committee’s findings in limbo.

For two years, the Justice Department investigated allegations that Mr Gaetz had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and potentially violated federal sex trafficking laws.

However, the department ended its investigation in 2023 without bringing any charges against him.

While Mr Gaetz has repeatedly denied the accusations, including ever engaging in sexual misconduct or obstructing government investigations, the ethics probe had been ongoing for years.

The report, which could have cast a shadow over Mr Gaetz’s political career, will now likely remain unpublished as the Ethics Committee loses its jurisdiction over him with his resignation.

With the ethics probe cut short, Mr Gaetz’s future in Washington is now uncertain, but the political fallout from these investigations could reverberate for some time.
