Ethiopia expands AI use, applied research

Ethiopia is stepping up the development and application of AI, alongside efforts to strengthen applied scientific research.
The minister of innovation and technology, Belete Molla, disclosed this on Friday at a national conference marking the 50th anniversary of the country’s development in science, research and digitalisation.
Ethiopia has, over the past five years, made targeted investments aimed at moving from adapting foreign technologies to developing home grown solutions.
The government is also putting in place a legal framework to support start- ups and new technology projects.
According to the report, the technology drive is also being extended to the education sector, where the use of digital tools is expanding in schools.
The initiative is expected to equip young people with skills needed to work and compete at the international level. Ethiopia is further exploring emerging areas such as the bioeconomy and space industry.
The government is seeking to strengthen the country’s scientific and technological capacity and harness it to support economic development.
