Ethiopia intends to position Addis Ababa as a leading healthcare hub in Africa, including for specialised medical care and medical tourism.

The country’s Deputy Prime Minister, Temesgen Tiruneh, announced this, according to TV BRICS.

He also said Ethiopia intends to expand local production of pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, and diagnostic tools.

One key focus will be developing public-private partnerships and regional cooperation.

The authorities hope to attract further investment into the healthcare sector and strengthen collaboration between government bodies, medical organisations, investors, and other partners.

Ethiopia is also prepared to support the establishment of the Africa Healthcare Federation’s continental headquarters in Addis Ababa.

According to Mr Tiruneh, this will strengthen the capital’s position as a hub for African investment in healthcare, political dialogue and regional cooperation.

The country aims to establish Addis Ababa as a leading African medical centre, capable of attracting patients from other countries.

The medical centre will also support the development of East Africa’s healthcare economy.

Mr Tiruneh emphasised that these efforts should be assessed by the volume of investment attracted and the businesses established.

The efforts will also assess the production of medicines and medical equipment, as well as the development of partnerships.
