Portuguese tactician and new AS Roma coach, Jose Mourinho, has described Manchester United’s Midfielder, Bruno Fernandes as a flop in the opening two games for Portugal at the ongoing Euro2020.

Fernandes won the English Premier League player of the month award successively in November and December in the 2020-2021 season where he was the star player at Old Trafford.

Finishing third on the 2020-2021 highest goalscorer chart and second on the highest assists chart behind Harry Kane, Fernandes recorded 30 goal contributions with 18 goals and 12 assists.

But the former Sporting player has failed to replicate his Red Devils performance with the Portuguese team who are now at the brink of crashing out of the Euro2020 tournament.

The former Manchester United coach in his assessment of the team via Talksport stated that Fernandes has not lived up to his quality since the competition started.

“He can pass, he can score, he can get penalties, he can score penalties, he can score free-kicks and he has a lot to give,” Mourinho said of Bruno Fernandes.

“But the reality is that, in these two matches, he was not there.”

“Until now, Bruno is not playing,” he concluded.

In Group F, Portugal are currently third with three points from two games behind Germany also on three points and France leading with four points.

Portugal’s 3-0 victory against Hungary has been the only positive result so far in the Euro2020 competition where they were embarrassed with a 4-2 loss to Germany.

The 26-year-old Fernandes has recorded no assist or goal in over 180 minutes in the tournament which has seen him being criticised by pundits across the world.

For a player who was in contention for PFA player of the year last season, Fernandes has fallen short of expectations while dropping a stinker in both matches against Germany and Hungary.

However, his current form is consistent with his subpar performances for the Portuguese national team since his debut in 2017. He has only registered four goals in 31 appearances.

His first three international goals have come against Algeria in June 7, 2018 and twice against Israel in June 9, 2021-both friendly games- while the fourth was against Luxembourg in November 17, 2019 during a qualifier for the Euro2020.

Portugal will be hoping on an improved Bruno Fernandes to deliver against France where only a draw or victory can secure them qualification to the round of 16.

“I hope he turns up against France because he is a player with incredible potential,” Mourinho said of the United playmaker.
