The quarterfinal game between Manchester United and Olympique Lyon was one of the greatest matches in Europa League history, as the former staged a dramatic comeback to beat the French club in extra time to win the match 5-4, sealing a 7-6 aggregate victory.

Ruben Amorim’s side were winning the game at half-time, two nil up with goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot before Lyon’s Tolisso and Tagliafico equalised the game to take them both to extra time.

Lyon’s captain, Corentin Tolisso, was shown a red card right before extra time after a light touch on Leny Yoro as he drove forward, leaving his team down to 10 men.

The visitors scored twice on either side of half-time in extra time through Cherki’s well-taken strike and Lacazette’s penalty to take a two-goal lead.

With United looking like all hope was lost and fans beginning to leave the stadium, VAR’s intervention in the 113th minute resulted in another spot-kick.

Casemiro was brought down in the box, and the Portuguese magnifico Bruno Fernandes dispatched a goal to give the hosts a lifeline.

As the 120th minute approached, Casemiro was involved again to set up Kobbie Mainoo, who delivered a superb finish, finding the far corner to make it 4-4 on the night and 6-6 on aggregate.

The Brazilian’s cross was then headed home by Harry Maguire to win it for the Red Devils, delivering the 5-4 comeback and a 7-6 aggregate win to book their place in the semis.

United will face Athletic Club in the semi-finals and Tottenham.

Hotspur will host Bodo/Glimt in the other tie.
